1. When is the best time to see the sunrise and sea of clouds at Mt. Huangshan?

Mt. Huangshan (Yellow Mountain) is most famous for its sunrise and sea of clouds. However, the wonders are subject to the changeable weather. The weather on the mountain is quite changeable, so you do not have to be upset about the possibility of inclement weather, because the landscapes of Mt. Huangshan are outstanding at any time. The best time to see the sea of clouds is from September to next May. During This period, the disturbances of atmosphere are rare and the clouds are relatively stable, so it is easily form and the sea of clouds disappear slowly. In the summer, Huangshan is controlled by Pacific subtropical high pressure; the temperature is high in the lower layer, the convection is quite strong, so the clouds are relatively not stable, therefore in the summer, sea of the clouds are relatively less.

For Sunrise, 5:30-6:00 am in the spring, 4:40-5:10 am in the summer, 4:50-6:20 am in the autumn, and 5:30-6:00 am in the winter are best time to watch the magnificent sunrise at the summit of the mountain.

2. What should I prepare with me before I hike on the Mt. Huanghshan?

Firstly, the most important thing is take the comfortable shoes as you will climb hundreds of steps to the various peaks and the stairs are narrow and the ground sometimes slippery, and sometimes you will walk along the edge of cliffs. Sneakers are good enough while sturdy, comfortable hiking shoes are a better choice; comfortable hiking shoes are a better choice.

Secondly, prepare enough water and snacks, as during the walking, you need replenish water incessantly and snacks can keep your energy level up.

Thirdly, you should bring a jacket with on your hike. Temperatures drop as the altitude increases, and the weather is a little chilly in the late evening through early morning although in summer. 

Fourthly, in case of rain, it is recommended that you bring a raincoat or rain jacket instead of an umbrella, because the winds on the mountain can be extremely strong. It is risk to use umbrella.

Fifthly, a walking stick is quite useful on hiking the Mt. Huanghan. It can help you balance and reduce the weight on your knees. Walking sticks are easily bought at the foot of mountain.

3. What is the best time to travel to Huangshan?

Mt. Huangshan is a year-round travel destination with its different beauty in different seasons. Probably, spring is the most propitious season for travel to Mt. Huanghan. You can meet the brilliantly blooming flower, tender green of the branch shoots or grass scatter all over the mountain, and fresh, crisp air when you are climbing up the mountain, together with enjoy the pleasant birdsong and the magnificent roaring of the waterfalls. Light rains fall through the spring and mist or thick fog often happens.

In summer, Mt. Huangshan still cool and averagely less than 20ºC on the summit because of its height and its dense plantation and constant rainfalls. It is regards as an ideal summer resort. But beware that you may still get burnt when it is clear.

Autumn is the most comfortable and scenery is stunningly beautiful. Mt. Huangshan is drenched in different colors. Red maples, yellow fruits and verdant pines with the clearest days in this season unveil the mature beauty of the mountain. Thus autumn is generally considered the best travel time.

During winter period, especially around December to February, Mt. Huangshan carpeted with the thick snow, the photographers flock to the mountain to capture the snow scene. The sea of clouds appears more frequent in winter than other seasons.

4. What are your tips for travel to Mt. Huangshan?

  1. In spring and summer, antiskid light shoes, raincoat or rain jacket instead umbrella, especially avoid umbrella with metal material for the constant storm and wind; light jacket and sunblock, hat, etc. are required.

  2. Summer and autumn is peak season, especially the one-week National Day Holiday from Oct.1st to 7th, it is better to make you accommodation and transfer reservation in advance.

  3. Pay attention to the big difference in temperature between daytime and night in autumn.

  4. In winter, bring the gloves to lessen the friction when grasping the iron fence chain along the mount. Sunglasses are advised to protect your eyes from the light reflection of the snow.

5. How can I get to Huangshan?

There are flights connecting Huangshan and Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Hefei. The Huangshan airport is quite near from downtown of the city. The bus station is in the downtown, you can take the bus to the Mt. Huangshan scenic area, or you can take taxi directly to the mountain.

You also take train to Huangshan. There are trains connecting Huangshan and Beijing, Shanghai, Suzhou, Xiamen, Guangzhou, Fuzhou, Nanjing.

The nearest big city to Huangshan is Hangzhou. There is expressway between Huangshan and Huangzhou and it only takes about 2 hours from Hangzhou to Huangshan.

6. Are there any local specialties in Huanghan?

Yes. The Huangshan Maofeng tea, Hui Ink Stick, and the Bamboo Shoots are most famous specialties in Huangshan.

If you are interested in the traditional Chinese calligraphy and painting or you have some friends like, you can buy some in Tunxi Ancient Street.

Early March is the early tea leave time and tea leave during this time worth purchasing if you are a tea fan and visit Huangshan just in this period. It is better to the authorized tea shops or supermarkets to ensure the tea quality.

7. Are there any delicious foods in Huangshan?

Hui cuisine is one of the major cuisines in China. It highlights the color, seasoning as well as original flavor of the ingredients.
