What to pack for travelling to Tibet

Take a trip to Tibet is just like to any other places, but remember its unique geographic, climatic features, and most part of it is remote area. We have to consider what we should pack beforehand. We have concluded some must-have items below.

A large backpack is not good choice unless you intent to do the trekking tour in Tibet. A waist bag is quite useful to keep the property, important document. Miscellaneous items you may wish to bring along include maps of the areas that you plan on visiting.

Casual attire is recommended. Tibet has fairly cold weather even in the summer. It is much colder at night than the daytime. You can count on experiencing the sudden onset of foul weather as well as temperature extremes while in Tibet. Warm clothing is a must to ensure a comfortable tour.

Wearing several layers of clothing that can be easily added or removed is the wise choice since temperature may vary greatly within a single day.
A down coat is necessary for those who are traveling beyond Lhasa and Shigatse into more remote areas such as the Everest Camp.

A windbreaker is advisable at any time of a year.

Do not forget a pair of durable and comfortable shoes. Water-proof and warm-keeping climbing shoes are recommended.

Water-proof clothing and raingear are highly recommended when you travel to Tibet in July or August as it is the raining season.

A down jacket (better with hat) together with other warm-keeping clothing is necessary if you want to travel into remote areas or to have a trekking tour.

Women should avoid skirts or dresses.

Hotels in some areas of Tibet are very simple. You’d better take a cup, towels, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and slippers with you. It is not very convenient to wash clothes, so disposable underpants will help you a lot. An electric torch is also necessary as some hotels don't even have power at night and sometimes you may have to travel early in the morning.

Guard against Ultraviolet Rays

UV radiation is strong in Tibet and increases by 5 percent with every 300 meters above sea level. Strong UV is harmful to both eyes and skin, so when you go out into the sun, you should wear anti-UV sunglasses, a sun hat and sun block and high SPE sunscreen cream is needed.

Medicine to prevent the High Altitude Sickness such as Diamox is indispensable. This kind of medicine in Tibet is very effective; you can also buy some after your arrival. Besides, try to bring the following medicine which will be very useful during your travel:

  • Aspirin-for pain or fever
  • Antibiotics-consider including these if you are traveling well off the beaten track.
  • Cold and flu tablets, throat lozenges and nasal decongestant
  • Multivitamins-consider for long trips, when dietary vitamin intake may be inadequate
  • Scissors, tweezers and thermometer
